Life on the sidewalk
With the final aim to reach Varanasi, Dharamshala and Kashmir I traveled a lot on the endless and dusty roads in central India passing through Delhi, Agra, Rishikesh and Amritsar. Aside from unique spiritual experiences and wonderful treasures of humanity seen there, here are some images of the other “side” of India about the people living their existence on the pavements of the city. Literally every human activity, cooking, eating, working, playing, sleeping happens on the dusty sidewalks. Weak, sick and marginalized people living in poverty heartbreaking directly on the streets. Hundreds of thousands of people spending their life in these conditions. Here survival is a higher value than human dignity.
Incredible scenes unfold before your eyes anywhere you are: people who are shaving on the street, motorcycle riders that are carrying almost all their home on their back, a bunch of scrawny cows and dry dung pie fires around which dozens of creatures wrapped in blankets seem to follow an ancient ritual. Near a wall, an old man shaves it on another. Next to him another sleeps in a trolley. A little further – another chair, another activity.
Following the elections in May 2014, India’s president appointed Narendra Modi as the new 15’th prime minister. He said: “India has won, good days are coming” Many people I talked to say that he is now the great hope of India. Maybe it’s true. In India, anything is possible.
