The dunes of Erg Chebbi are a strikingly strange natural formation. On the top of the flattest area one could imagine, a sudden long mountain of sand rises. The shifting Erg Chebbi dunes in Western Morocco reach as high as 250 meters and run past the village of Hassi Labied and south beyond Merzouga. Wave upon wave of rich orange sand roll out into the distance creating endless patterns of light and shade. The tilted dunes lie with their surfaces rippled by shallow lines and their edges sharpened by the wind, forming perfect wedges of sand. Their color changes throughout the day from a gentle early pink to a piping hot orange and then a burning red before softening once more as the sun dips into the desert leaving the moon in charge for the night.
