Four days in Hanoi
Arriving in Hanoi is like stepping into another world. The thick pungent smell of exhaust fumes hang in the air from the 4 million bikes zipping around the streets like a swarm of bees. The very first thing that I learned about this pulsating city was how to cross the street – almost a matter of faith. First, you have to find a gap in the traffic. Then begin to walk slowly but firmly. Walk steady and don’t look back and you’ll discover that the traffic will literally begin flowing around you. The pace of life in Hanoi ranges from the hectic to the docile, often side-by-side. It’s amazing how people can go on with their business with such profound serenity amidst this organized chaos. These people live where they work, and they work hard to live. Finally, my biggest lesson was learned from the Vietnamese people themselves. The friendliness of so many of the people I met has given me an enormous boost in understanding the traditions and culture of such brave people.
