Stockholm
Stockholm doesn’t boast a singular iconic image that people around the world can recognize instantly, but what it doesn’t have in grandeur it compensates by the amazing layout of islands and waterways. Essentially Stockholm is made up of islands and bridges. If over 30 percent of the city area of Stockholm is made up of waterways, another 30 percent is made up of parks and green spaces.
The wandering walkways, the arresting vistas, the reflections from water in all its forms, the stunning cobblestone streets, the beige, yellow, orange or red building facades – there is something here that reveals the essential about the Swedish character.
Minimalism is being present everywhere. The pervasive innovative spirit along with the simple and natural design of all things amazes me and makes me smile.
Nowhere else the idea of nature overlapped to the city is so evident. The Swedes completely identify with their city and they respect it until the last trashcan. The respect for the environment is everywhere, from the cleanliness of the streets and the selective collection of garbage until the ethanol buses and the immense number of bicycles.
Unfortunately, Stockholm is an expensive city but luckily for me, my favorite activity is free: walking.
