Djemaa El Fna Encounters
Symbol of the imperial town, Djemaa El Fna is the main and most visited market in Marrakech. If you look at its name, it literally means “gathering of the dead” and it recalls the times when Christian sinners and criminals were executed by decapitation and their heads publicly exhibited to the crowds. Times have changed and today the place grew to be a huge festival of colors, sounds, smells and tastes, a meeting point for vendors, snake charmers, musicians, dancers, henna artists, story tellers and even thieves.
During the first hours of the afternoon, the place changes into a live scene and the show comes to live in every corner. Thousands of characters appear one by one and mingle with the curious tourists. Laying its carpet on the street a snake charmer starts his number. Gnawa musicians and dancers play the drums in an endless rhythm. The moment when Djema El Fna becomes the most fabulous location, though, is at down. The food aromas fill the air and hundreds of lights are turned on above the stalls. Infinity of traditional specialties long for tasting: lamb stake, kefka loafs, briouat, bastila or the most famous of them all, the tajine. The grills keep burning all night long while homeless cats wander around them in search for lefties. The sound of music dances in the air together with the smoke rising up from all around the area. Tomorrow is almost here and everything will start all over again.
