Mykonos – The picture-perfect Island
Mykonos is part of the Cyclades islands and although it is barren and dry, its cosmopolitan aura has made it one of the glitziest islands in the Mediterranean. Mykonos Town is picture-postcard Greece, a little dreamlike place lapped by a crystal-clear sea.
Despite the great tourist development of the island, it manages to maintain its traditional look. It has a charming and picturesque port wrapped around a tiny bay near where five whitewashed ancient windmills stand as seaside sentinels. Its cube-shaped white houses glow in the sunlight, scattered in the countless labyrinthine alleys and streets with whitewashed cobbled pavements. Arched porticos, balconies and staircases create a rhythmical composition of volumes, while pink oleanders form a vivid contrast amid the dazzling whiteness. Just around the corner is “Little Venice,” a scenic embankment of restaurants along the waterfront. As if they knew who are the richest tourists, colonies of cats form crowds at Japanese tourists tables in taverns located right on the seashore. A little further, in the harbor, a small colorful flotilla of fishing boats completes this unique picture with its vivid colors.
The light: Spellbinding. The sky: Azure blue and brilliant. The sea: Magnificent hues of crystal clear turquoise. The pure, white, cubist architecture of the Cyclades islands: Intoxicating. Couple this with all that Greece has given to the world, and you have something close to paradise.
