Where East meets West
It’s late on a sunny evening and fishermen are lined up against the railings, angling for a lucky catch from the Bosphorus. The call to prayer can be heard from the nearby Yeni Cami mosque, while businessmen wandering by after work, chattering on their smartphones. In the streets, mysterious and warm voices run after smoking and busy hands. “Hookah” time. The strong scent of coffee sneak out from lively restaurants and cafes.
This is Istanbul – the places were East meets West, Asia greets Europe, kebab for lunch and a cheeseburger for dinner. No wonder the city is referred to as the world’s cultural melting pot. Istanbul, is a bustling, noisy, colorful, friendly city with over 16 million people. Modern and ancient at the same time, it has been re-invented many times throughout the ages. Here, cultures and continents equally meet each other. The old and the new, the oriental, the bazaars, the sea, the fishermen, the smell of the fresh “Simit”. There is nothing like it.
Istanbul, city upon two continents; with the cultures, the contrasts and the thousands of years of influence from both continents, well mixed on either side of the Bosporus. A city with a long and noble history and yet moving with giant steps towards a fascinating and buzzing future.
