Morocco outskirts
There is a long and unfortunate history about the outskirts and their eradication in Morocco. Nowadays around 7% of the population lives in ghettos and suburbs, most of them gathered around the biggest city – Casablanca. In the medinas the poorest citizens manage to survive due to the traditional Morocco solidarity and also to the small trade but in the bigger towns such as Casablanca the situation is much different – commercial activity lacks completely and people are isolated from the rest of the society, pushing them towards inappropriate behavior.
Hidden behind tall walls, the huts are practically “baking” under the strong rays of sun. Dogs, sheep and goats run freely, the smoke floats above the waste grounds and small children enjoy the hallucinations given by the glue inhaled from plastic bags. Time is the only luxury people afford in the outskirts of the big Morocco communities.
The poverty and despair pushed many of the young folks to consider the proposals coming from the Islamic extremist groups in search for recruits.
