Life in Pai
Pai is a lovely, crazy small village located in the beautiful green area of northern Thailand, about 3-4 hours away from the city of Chaing Mai from East.
With a mixture of cool Thais and “Farangs” (the Thai word for westerners) Pai is a laidback town and the locals tend to have the same outlook on life as the foreign visitors: growing dreadlocks, smoking weed, doing pretty much nothing all day. The town of Pai itself is full of Meditation and Yoga centers, dreadlocks, hippies, spiritual wanderers.
I stayed here for 2 nights. For me, my wife and other two traveling companions our stay here was a well-deserved slow-paced break in our tiring roads through the Hill-Tribes villages. We managed to go around and do some shopping in the great night market filled with handy-crafts. Indie artists from all over the world have planted their feet in this valley, which gave Pai a certain flavor and feel of hippy/shabby, chic/cotton candy art.
Pai isn’t full of wonderful culture and it isn’t loaded with an interesting history. Don’t expect to learn much about northern Thai culture, as hardly anything there is authentic. For what it’s worth, Pai remain a popular hangout for hippie-type travelers looking for a cool place to chill out and relax.
Where to stay? The town is filled with cute little bamboo huts in a backpacker friendly environment. Hammocks galore! What to eat? The chefs of the restaurants slow cook the meat and the broth for hours. Heaven! What to do? Nothing!
