The capital of pubs
“Your first day in Dublin is always your worst” – with nice ambiguity claimed John Berryman, an American poet who was sometimes drunk in Dublin. The coolest part of visiting Dublin is that you know a fact from the beginning: The Ireland’s capital is the capital of pubs. Pubs full of beer and whiskeys.
Irish pubs emanate two essential things: history and beer. The exhortation to “drink responsibly” dissipates into another phrase, much closer to the truth: “Be responsible! Be careful not to spill the drink!” If you feel lost, for starters, go straight to Temple Bar. There is the place where “the perdition” is the best friend you have. If can’t find a place to sit, you can still drink up in the street where you’ve found a cozy corner to watch the crowd and socialize with other tourists. If this was not enough to complete your Irish-pubs experience, go to the Church! It is a pub-restaurant housed in a former church. At O’Neills’ Townhouse you’ll be surprised to find something very special: their rooms are libraries with books where people (as it happened in the past) come to drink beer, to read and discuss. A visit to Dublin wouldn’t be complete without going to the Guinness Storehouse and paying homage to Ireland’s liquid gold.
